“If you teach a person WHAT TO LEARN, you are preparing that person for the PAST. If you teach a person HOW TO LEARN, you are preparing that person for the FUTURE.”
~ Cyril Houle ~
This quotation implies that education is not just a one time process of learning but a continuous journey towards self-improvement.
When you teach a person “what to do” you are actually spoon-feeding everything to him. You just let him have it all with no sweat – zero effort. And with this kind of learning where everything’s right in front of the table, it’s really expected that it all fades away and be eventually forgotten. However, when you teach him “how to do it”, then you give him the opportunity to learn by himself. It’s like you’re opening a door towards self-discovery. You are actually giving him the chance to stand on his own and be responsible for his life. With this kind of strong foundation, everything he learns would definitely last long.
By means of teaching the students “how to learn”, it could pave the way the student’s future on how they are to discover things that might help in their life as they move forward.
I Agree. When I was still young learning chess, My brother taught me on what to do or what to move when particular position arrives. It seems working at some point but I realized that I was just memorizing. So I started to learn on my own guided by my brother to understand things rather than memorizing them. So now, it is much easier to remember and more confident to move.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's right. There's nothing wrong in memorizing as long as you understand it.
